Hello SRJC Shone,

Spring 2025 is just around the corner!

The couple of warm days we had last week may get you excited for spring, but there is still rain and frosty mornings coming.

As you start seeing plant starts outside many stores, you may be tempted to get your garden growing right away. We recommend holding off a little longer before planting anything in the ground, though.

Farm coordinator, Anthony Blondin, suggests waiting to plant warm season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and squash until the first couple of weeks in May. They are heat-loving plants and will not do well if planted while the soil is cold and wet. Even once the sun comes out and the days grow warmer, the soil can take a while to warm up to ideal temperatures for plants.

Planting too early can cause the plants to struggle. Anthony has found that starts planted later in the season tend to catch up to those planted earlier. So start making your wish list for the summer garden, but hold off on planting tender starts in the ground for a little while longer.

The SRJC Shone Farm plant sale is in-person Saturday April 26th from 9am-1pm. No pre-ordering this year. We hope to see you there!

This sale is a collaboration between the Sustainable Agriculture and Horticulture programs. We will have CCOF (certified organic) plant starts including tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, cucumbers, and greens. We'll also have non-certified flowers, herbs, native and house plants.

Happy Growing!
