Shone Farm is home to a livestock complex that spans approximately 100 acres of irrigated pasture dedicated to the care for cattle, sheep, and goats. Facilities include the James A. Porter Animal Science Center, outdoor arenas, horse paddocks, corrals, and the Porter Barn for housing multiple species, all designed to support hands-on learning in grazing, feeding, health care, breeding, and animal handling. The program raises grass‑fed beef and lamb, much of which is processed into meat products sold under the Shone Farm label—supporting the farm’s self‑sustaining operation and giving students insight into the full cycle from production to market.
Student internships and experiential learning in animal science are central to the program’s educational mission. Through positions such as Student Farm Livestock Interns, SRJC students work 12–24 hours a week caring for herds, rotating pasture, assisting with feed, and maintaining facilities under supervision. The Animal Science curriculum—including courses like Livestock Feeding, Basic Animal Science, and Meat Science—complements this by teaching standards in nutrition, animal health, processing, and marketing, preparing students for careers or transfer. In the past, Shone Farm has hosted annual livestock judging clinics, featuring classes in beef, sheep, and meat goats for students and youth competitors. Participants evaluate live animals, present oral reasons, and refine selection skills.
