The Vineyard

Shone Farm GrapesShone Farm hosts approximately 91 acres of planted wine grapes—including key Sonoma County varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc grown in the Russian River Valley AVA. The college sells much of this fruit to established regional wineries, including Hanna, Sonoma‑Cutrer, La Crema, Francis Ford Coppola, and Korbel. In Fall 2008, SRJC began producing under its own Shone Farm Wine label, making small‑lot vintages crafted by consulting winemaker Pat Henderson and Wine Studies students.

The vineyard is deeply integrated into SRJC’s Viticulture and Wine Studies programs, functioning as an outdoor classroom and living laboratory. A one‑acre teaching block showcases 54 grape cultivars and 14 rootstocks and gives viticulture students hands‑on experience in pruning, canopy management, crop projections, and pest monitoring, while the broader commercial vineyard is farmed by industry experts and used for contract sales. The Wine Studies students gain real-world experience in harvest operations, crush pad processing, fermentation, sensory evaluation, and marketing—even helping design labels and manage the wine club. Shone Farm also hosts annual events—such as the SRJC Fall Festival with wine tastings—that highlight the vineyard’s role in teaching and community outreach.
