The SRJC Shone Farm Livestock Intern position is primarily designed for SRJC Animal Science program students to deepen and enhance their knowledge and learning of the principles and practices of livestock management through hands-on participation in the barns and pastures. This position is best utilized when students are also enrolled in concurrent SRJC Animal Science classes. Although preference is given to students enrolled in the Animal Science program, we accept applications from enrolled SRJC students in an Agricultural or Natural Resource major. This position helps perform the daily operations of Shone Farm in the barn and pasture areas, including: participating in the feeding and care of livestock, rotational grazing throughout the pastures and other areas of the farm using grazing as a tool for land management, stewardship of the overall farm site, and maintaining a safe and orderly public farm. The livestock intern is part of the livestock crew and is expected to perform tasks both as part of a team and independently. Opportunities exist for advancement in this position to crew lead, pending demonstration of leadership, reliability, initiative, and practical skill and knowledge.
Job details:
• $19.88/hr, with increases possible upon periodic review and advancement
• Jobs average 12-24 hours per week
• Work schedule is flexible
• Schedule will be set within Mon – Fri from 8 am – 4:30 pm (plus optional Saturdays for events)
• Must be enrolled in 6 units in the Spring and Fall semesters and 3 units in the Summer
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Participation in feeding, moving, handling livestock
- Participate in land management including: weed eating, brush clearing, erosion mitigation, tree planting, tree trimming, wood chipping, tree watering, weeding.
- Participation in safety trainings and compliance with all farm safety protocols
- Daily record keeping of tasks, time management, and farm inputs
- Possible participation in weekend and evening public farm events
