Shone Farm Garden Internship
Position Description
The Shone Farm Garden Intern position is primarily designed for SRJC Sustainable Agriculture program students to deepen and enhance their knowledge and learning of the principles and practices of sustainable agriculture through hands-on participation in farm operations. This position is best utilized when students are also enrolled in concurrent SRJC Sustainable Agriculture classes. Although preference is given to students enrolled in the Sustainable Agriculture program, we do accept applications from enrolled SRJC students outside of the program.
This position assists in performing the day-to-day operations of Shone Farm; participates in the productions of farm products; stewardship of the overall farm site; and maintaining a safe and orderly public farm. The farm intern is part of a crew of other farm interns and is expected to be able to perform tasks as part of a team as well as independently. Opportunities exist for advancement in this position to farm crew lead pending demonstration of leadership, reliability, initiative, and practical skill and knowledge.
Job details:
- $19.88/hr, with increases upon periodic review and advancement
- Jobs average 12-24 hours per week
- Work schedule is flexible
- Schedule will be set within Mon – Fri 8 – 4:30 (plus optional Saturdays for events)
- Must be enrolled in 6 units per semester for Spring and Fall semesters; 3 units in Summer semester
Key duties and responsibilities:
Participates in the maintenance of the farm, including vegetable, horticulture, agriculture, and landscape plants as well as performs tasks supporting irrigation and fertilization activities on-site
Participate in orchard management, including pruning, thinning, and harvesting
Hand-scale bed preparation, transplanting (both mechanical and by hand), weeding and cultivation, installing crop infrastructure, ongoing crop maintenance, harvest, post-harvest handling, and packing
Participate in all greenhouse activities including making potting mix, sowing seeds, watering, potting up, and asexual propagating by divisions, cuttings, etc.
Ongoing and periodic general landscaping and maintenance of the farm and surrounding landscapes
Participation in safety trainings and compliance with all farm safety protocols
Daily record keeping of tasks, time management, and farm inputs
Participation in daily and farm staff meetings and social events
Possible participation in weekend and evening public farm events
