APPLICATION FOR SHONE FARM RESIDENT PROGRAM

Shone Farm

Santa Rosa Junior College

7450 Steve Olson Lane

Forestville, CA 95436

Shone Farm is a 365-acre outdoor learning laboratory for the SRJC Agriculture & Natural Resources Department. Located 12 miles from the Santa Rosa campus, between the towns of Forestville and Windsor, the farm consists of vineyards, forest, pasture, and a sustainable horticulture garden. Students enrolled in the AG/NR program learn commercial production techniques that prepare them for employment, or transfer to a four-year university.

Students selected to participate in the Shone Farm Resident Program must carry a full time class load (12 units) for the fall and spring semesters. A grade point average of 2.0 or higher is required while residing at Shone Farm. Students with Agriculture and Natural Resource majors will have priority during the selection process.

Students selected for the Resident Program are required to work 12 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. The number of hours per week can vary with farm activities, but should average out to 48 hours by the end of each month. In lieu of a monthly rental charge, student occupants will be required to perform a variety of duties, including, but not limited to the following:

  1. Perform general cleaning and upkeep of Shone Farm buildings and surrounding areas. This may include trash disposal, restroom and floor cleaning, and safety checks of fire extinguishers and first aid kits, as requested by the Farm Manger or designated Shone Farm staff member.
  2. Perform routine farm chores to include maintenance of farm facilities, equipment and pasture, and other routine chores as requested by the Farm Manager or designated Shone Farm staff member.
  3. Perform routine duties in the Sustainable Ag unit such as watering, and some crop maintenance. Perform landscaping duties in general farm areas, as well as watering, fertilizing, pruning, and trash collection, as requested by the Farm Manager or designated Shone Farm staff member.
  4. Perform routine duties in the forest, including trail maintenance, removal of invasive plant species, tree planting and lumber milling, as requested by the Farm Manager or designated Shone Farm staff member.

Residents may have the opportunity to become student employees and to work more than the minimum number of hours (12) required for residency. The additional hours will be paid at the prevailing student rate.

Student occupants are required to maintain their kitchen areas, bedroom and restroom in a clean and orderly condition. The student will perform this upkeep on his or her own time, and this does not count towards fulfillment of the monthly work-trade obligation. It is important that these areas be maintained and to the standard determined by the Farm Manager.

A cleaning and repair deposit of $100 is payable prior to moving in. This deposit will be refunded when the student vacates the student housing. Refunds will be issued in full, or in part, depending on the condition the room is left in, as determined by the Farm Manager.

Student occupants are responsible for preparing their own meals and doing their own laundry.
